Without question, Empire of the Sun, is Mark Herman’s masterpiece. It manages to combine card play with a hex based system that, at times, presents puzzles so engaging they border on maddening to solve. This constant churn of what must be done with what you want to do gives Empire of the Sun a truly delightful gameplay experience. One area where I think the game truly shines is in how areas of control are represented. For a theater game this large, it would be easy to simply suggest the 6 hexes surrounding, but the reality is that there are sensor array, CAP flights, and a variety of smaller factors that account for a wider zone of influence. Herman manages to capture each distinct era of the war in the pacific in a playable way with Empire of the Sun.
